Roommates

“We imagined this program as a way of telling, together with others, a story that reflects who we are, and to celebrate the diverse choreographic writings of artists who have shaped our vision, given us our first emotions, and continue to accompany us today. It feels more important than ever to pay tribute to them through this project.”

(LA)HORDE

Some of the works featured in the ROOMMATES program have marked the history of the Ballet national de Marseille, such as Les Indomptés by Claude Brumachon, restaged by Marie-Claude Pietragalla in 1999 for the Opéra de Marseille, Concerto by Lucinda Childs, and Room With a View by (LA)HORDE. They coexist here with three new creations: Weather Is Sweet by (LA)HORDE, Oiwa by Peeping Tom, inspired by the eponymous Japanese legend, and Grime Ballet (Dancing Because We Cannot Speak to Animals) by Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, which draws its energy from the intensity of the grime music repertoire.

By bringing together such diverse works, (LA)HORDE seeks to question notions of archives and heritage. Why reactivate this repertoire, and in doing so, how can it be reinterpreted for today?

The performances offer a journey through six works for two to nine dancers of the Ballet national de Marseille, connecting hyperrealism and minimalism, and colliding a wide range of contemporary choreographic languages.

The Roommates program is adaptable for touring depending on the venues.
