François Chaignaud
François Chaignaud is a French dancer, choreographer, singer, and writer born in 1983 in Rennes. He is best known for his collaboration with dancer and choreographer Cecilia Bengolea in their company Vlovajob Pru, founded in 2007.
He began studying dance at the age of 6 and graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris in 2003. He went on to collaborate with several choreographers, including Boris Charmatz, Emmanuelle Huynh, Alain Buffard, and Gilles Jobin. He creates performances that combine dance and song in a wide variety of venues at the crossroads of different inspirations.
Also a historian, François Chaignaud has published L'Affaire Berger-Levrault: le féminisme à l'épreuve (1898-1905) with PUR. This historical curiosity has led him to initiate various collaborations, notably with the legendary drag queen Rumi Missabu of the Cockettes, cabaret artist Jérôme Marin (Sous l’ombrelle, 2011), artist Marie Caroline Hominal (Duchesses, 2009), and fashion designers Romain Brau and Charlie Le Mindu.
In 2022, François Chaignaud joined forces with the Ballet National de Marseille to present his piece GRIME BALLET (DANSER PARCE QU’ON NE PEUT PAS PARLER AUX ANIMAUX), created with choreographer Cecilia Bengolea and presented as part of the shared program ROOMMATES.
