Lucinda Childs

Lucinda Childs developed a passion for ballet and theater as a child. Her encounters with Bessie Schönberg, Merce Cunningham, and Judith Dunn greatly influenced her and encouraged her to pursue a career as a professional dancer.

In the early 1960s, Childs helped found the Judson Dance Theater, an informal group that performed at Judson Memorial Church in New York City. After creating her own dance company in 1973, she made a name for herself during her first appearance at the Avignon Festival, thanks to her solo performance in Philip Glass's Einstein On The Beach, directed by Robert Wilson.

Since 1979, Lucinda Childs has worked with a large number of composers and designers, such as John Adams and Frank Gehry. Dance, created in 1979, was her first major collective ballet, with music by Philip Glass and a film/set design by Sol LeWitt. The piece was a success, receiving a Guggenheim Award. It was followed by numerous works in collaboration with other artists, such as Available Light in 1983. She created Premier Orage in 1984 for the Paris Opera Ballet and Perfect Stranger in 1990 for the Lyon Opera Ballet. In 2004, she was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. She designed the piece Tempo Vicino in 2010 for the Ballet National de Marseille.

In 2021, (LA)HORDE invited him to rework this creation with ballet dancers as part of the shared program CHILDS/CARVALHO/LASSEINDRA/DOHERTY.
