Marry Me in Bassiani

“We dance together – We fight together!”

From choreographic art to filmmaking, performance, and the creation of visual installations, the artists of the collective (LA)HORDE operate across multiple fields. After exploring so-called “post-internet” dances, they turned their attention to a movement of protest that emerged in Georgia through dance.

In May 2018, following a forceful police raid on the legendary Bassiani club, ten thousand people gathered in a spontaneous rave organized in front of the Parliament in Tbilisi. For this generation, it was a way to peacefully assert their freedom in a highly conservative country.

By engaging with the artists of the Ballet Iveroni, a Georgian traditional dance ensemble, (LA)HORDE realized that this was not the first time dance had taken on such a political and protest-driven dimension. Under the communist regime, the practice of Georgian dance had served national unity, symbolizing the country’s singular identity in the face of violent globalization.

Born from these encounters and conversations, Marry Me in Bassiani stands at the crossroads of all these influences. Through perfectly synchronized movements, the choreography combines technical virtuosity with techno music, clashes of sabres, and lovers soaring through the air.
