Eric Minh Cuong

Eric Minh Cuong Castaing was an associated artist at the Ballet national de Marseille from 2016 to 2019. In continuity with the research developed by Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten, this choreographer and animation creator explores the idea of “the body in revolt” within a contemporary context shaped by image culture and augmented reality.

Within Shonen, the company he founded in 2011, he brings together dance, new technologies, humanoid robots, and bodies in situ, in socius, in works such as Kaiju (2011), lil’Dragon (2013), and School of Moon (2016), alongside projects developed with children affected by mental and motor disorders (L’Âge d’or).

His piece Phœnix brings together four dancers and robotic drones. In it, Eric Minh Cuong Castaing questions the drone’s panoptic gaze, evoking both the remote-controlled planes of our childhood and the deadly machines of contemporary warfare.
