IT’S GOT LEGS!!!!!! is a duet performance conceived by Samir Kennedy and Sean Murray a show that brings together contemporary dance, the spirit of Broadway, and the queer punk energy of underground cabaret, all infused with a deliberately resourceful, DIY poetics.

Literally, the expression it’s got legs is used to describe an idea that has potential that it “might just work.” But we added all those exclamation marks to express something else as well: the surprise of encountering something that turns out to be slightly monstrous.

Because we’re drawn to things that are at once dirty and glamorous, pathetic and perverse.

It all began with nothing or rather, with the meeting of two performers while working on projects by Joe Moran and Charles Linehan. They discovered a shared energy, a natural rapport on stage, and a common line of inquiry:

“We were both working-class kids practising an art that has traditionally belonged to the bourgeoisie, and we wanted to question ideas of high and low art, as well as issues of class, poetry, and vulgarity.”

From this emerged the idea of a contemporary dance performance colliding with the world of queer cabaret.

“We were inspired by camp culture, the trashy, genderfuck aesthetic of performances in gay bars, and by the ever-present possibility of failure and vulnerability. We were also drawn to the tradition of the double act in British music hall, with its rich comic and performative possibilities.”

The songs also reflect the shifting dynamics within the duo, from Two Little Girls from Little Rock to He Needs Me, from Popeye.

“Each song represents a different moment in the relationship exploring power, companionship, brotherhood, dependency, and even toxicity.”

IT’S GOT LEGS!!!!!! is, above all, a work about fragility: the difficulty of making art and the ever-present possibility of failure. It speaks to artistic precarity and to economic and social hardship. It also explores what it means to inhabit a male body while embracing and performing femininity, and the vulnerability and risk of failure that such a gesture inevitably entails.

Addressing the audience directly, IT’S GOT LEGS!!!!!! expresses the idea of precarity through a scenography reduced to its bare essentials: a curtain, a makeshift stage, construction materials, and plastic sheeting.

“At first, there were lots of theatrical objects costumes, dresses, wigs, and so on. But gradually everything became simpler. Our designer created what are essentially ‘stand-ins’: small puppet-like doubles that multiply our possibilities on stage.”

Ultimately, what drives us is the desire to experiment and the fragility that inevitably comes with it.
