To Da Bone

In a world where revolutions unfold at night and laws are passed at dawn, what new forms can insurrection take?

TO DA BONE is a work that seeks to express a certain intimate revolt of youth, while questioning the role that new media can play in their ability to mobilize crowds and spark movements of opposition.

On stage, several dance forms grouped under the term “post-internet” are reactivated, particularly those stemming from the Hardstyle movement and Hard Dance practices such as Tekstyle, Shuffle, Hakken, and especially Jumpstyle. Extremely intense and physical for the performers, a Jumpstyle sequence lasts on average 25 seconds. During that time, jumpers expend all their available energy to carry their freestyle sequence through to completion.

What emerges is an exalted leg-driven dance, a powerful on-the-spot movement that reflects a form of release from underlying frustration. At the end of their solo, a jumper is breathless yet soothed, radiating a centered strength filled with defiance and confidence.

The 10-minute performance TO DA BONE, which won second prize at Danse Élargie at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris in 2016, is the first part of a one-hour choreographic work that (LA)HORDE developed for the 2017/2018 season.
