Sorour Darabi – One Thousand and One Nights (Studio Residency 2024)

Choreographer and transdisciplinary artist Sorour Darabi draws on the tales of One Thousand and One Nights to create a queer and political opera. Trans bodies and homosexual desires ignite a captivating eroticism as an act of resistance.

At once a contemporary opera, a visual installation, a dance piece, and a rewriting of One Thousand and One Nights, this eponymous work sees the Iranian-born dancer and interdisciplinary artist engaging with the famous collection of stories whose heroine is Scheherazade. Immersed in a nocturnal atmosphere, eight performers dancing and singing gradually emerge.

Around bodies undulating with sensuality, a fascinating space unfolds, composed of suspended ice sculptures and dense soundscapes performed live. Have trans bodies ever existed in opera? What if Scheherazade were queer? A bastion of resistance rises against white cis-heteronormative hegemony, against the erasure of homosexual and trans bodies in history.

The audience moves freely around this liminal space a fertile ground where new forms of love, desire, and tenderness take shape.
