Paula Rosolen – 16 BIT (Studio Residency 2021)

16 BIT explores techno as a social, political, and cultural phenomenon, as well as the conditions of its emergence.

Born out of decades of transatlantic cultural exchange, techno has given voice and purpose to marginalized communities, fostered scientific experimentation, and engaged with the avant-garde through technological and cultural revolutions. It is an Afrofuturist expression for Detroit’s Black community, and it embodied liberation and reunification during the fall of the Berlin Wall.

16 BIT absorbs these ideas and examines the evolution of techno from the loosely defined, DIY landscape of electronic music in the 1980s to the globally recognized genre that emerged in the early 1990s. As a performance, 16 BIT expresses the inherent energy of techno’s progressive arc in motion, embodying the physicality of music and the movement of the collective as an engaged, hypnotic body a body charged with meaning and with the power to transform the world beyond the limits of the dancefloor.
