Mette Ingvartsen – Skatepark (Studio Residency 2022)

Legend has it that skateboarding was born on a day when the waves were too small, forcing surfers in Los Angeles to take to the asphalt… Gliding through the streets, overcoming every new obstacle, skateboarding has become a distinct choreography performed across the surfaces of our cities reclaiming public space through vertiginous movements that cut across curves and boundaries, carrying the exhilaration of multiple dreams.

With a group of skateboarders and dancers, Mette Ingvartsen explores the speed and energy of movement on wheels a physical memory of her own youth. More than a display of virtuosic feats, Skatepark marks the emergence of a community defined by persistence and hard work, within the continuous practice of individuals who try, fall, get back up, and push the limits of what is possible alone, yet together.

Throughout this journey, the theater becomes a fluid framework for an encounter between an intergenerational group of skateboarders and dancers. Their repeated efforts to maintain balance and leap, their interactions and turbulent clashes within a shared space, form something greater — an entire society from which we might draw inspiration.
