Mercedes Dassy

Mercedes Dassy – Spongebabe in L.A (4 Love & Anxiety) (Studio Residency 2024)

As if dancing on the edge of an abyss, SpongeBabe rehearses in an underground cave the tracks of her new album, on the eve of her return to the stage. During this fantastical rehearsal, she confides her intimate metamorphoses in a flow shaped by tenderness, anger, irony, despair, and resilience. A fiercely devoted lover, an exhausted mother, an artist in crisis, a disenchanted activist SpongeBabe is all women.

Incandescent, physical, emotional, and political, SpongeBabe is a mutant figure: an exhausted diva, a cyberpunk heroine, a queer icon, and a fallen pop star. A fictional double of Mercedes Dassy, whose work is distinguished by a unique blend of political radicality and visual seduction. She sculpts hybrid female figures flamboyant yet fragile exploring the friction between vulnerability and self-assertion, collapse and self-rescue.

Mercedes Dassy unfolds a direct, confrontational dance, revealing behind the mask of the pop star a sensitive and radical reflection on tired bodies, mental overload, and collective exhaustion our ongoing attempts at survival within a capitalist, heteropatriarchal, and imperialist world. A mirror-performance that does not celebrate beauty and yet…
