Laia Santanach – Tradere (Studio Residency 2021)

Choreographer, dancer, and educator Laia Santanach examines, from a contemporary perspective, the representation of bodies within Western traditional practices (not necessarily dance-based), which, in order to be transmitted and shared, require physical commitment even a form of bodily sacrifice.

Her work is structured around two axes, reflected in the dual meaning of the title Tradere: to transmit (tradition) and to hand over (to surrender, to relinquish). Built around four actions running, jumping, generated movement, and weight Tradere stages how questions of transmission and temporality are embodied through the repetition of gestures drawn from Western traditional dances.

With Tradere, Laia Santanach explores the manifestation of ritualized practices and performances, aiming to capture those collective moments of celebration in which bodily sacrifice gives rise to community.
