Dorothée Munyaneza – Mailles (Studio Residency 2020)

“To tell stories together.

To gather and share intimate and collective memories those we carry as indelible and fertile traces, and that we shape every day. Memories inhabited by ancestral stories as well as contemporary ones. […]

The women brought together in MAILLES are women engaged in their daily lives; this is what makes them beautiful. For me, beauty lies in insubordination in the face of adversity, and in reclaiming what has been denied. Beauty is that living, conscious space of deep strength that exists within each of us and refuses to surrender.

Resilience as a weapon of resistance accompanies us and forms our strength, our beauty. And it is this strength that I wish to celebrate and share.”

MAILLES is the result of artistic and human encounters between Dorothée Munyaneza and six artists African or Afro-descendant women from around the world. Drawing from their stories and practices, the piece seeks to express the universality of their intertwined narratives, approaching humanity through the intimate.

An author, singer, and choreographer, Dorothée Munyaneza develops a deeply powerful body of work. Active on the international contemporary scene since the early 2000s through various musical and choreographic projects, she works from reality to engage with memory and the body both individual and collective.
