COMPAGNIE L’AUTRE MAISON, Andrew Graham & Annie Hanauer –

Starting with the Limbs (Studio Residency 2024)

Invited by Compagnie l’Autre Maison, Annie Hanauer takes as her starting point the experience of the prosthetic limb. Starting with the Limbs brings four dancers into unprecedented choreographic variations, incorporating wearable and carried sculptures designed and produced by designer Ghali Bensouda using digital morphogenesis and 3D printing. These structures play a dual role both costumes and scenographic elements anchoring the bodies within the landscape through an approach that is at once poetic and organic.

Drawing on her own experiences as well as those of the four dancers with or without disabilities particularly their relationship to limbs perceived as “non-normative,” Annie Hanauer creates singular choreographic self-portraits. Each performer expresses their individuality while remaining in constant attunement to the others, giving rise to true living tableaux.

These unique bodily landscapes redraw the boundaries between the body and its environment, offering a renewed perception of movement and identity.
