1950s Marseille. Le Corbusiers Cité radieuse. Also known as " la maison du fada ", it is a perfect representation of the kind of utopia architects of modernity were still able to strive for in their desire to model space and time with general wellbeing in mind.
At the dawn of the 21st century, modernity has taken root. After post-modernism, we now speak of supermodernity to explain the process of acceleration faced by the planet. Globalisation has imposed the idea of the global village. The idea behind Cité Radieuse is no longer carried by an individual but by a system built on the increasingly rapid movement of goods and people and on consumption. Symbolic places, represented by churches, and public places have been succeded by what anthropologist Marc Augé calls non-places : airports, shopping centres, transit stations and motorways where people rub shoulders without really meeting. Curiously non-places is the etymological meaning of the word " utopia ".
We would like to evoke a global Cité Radieuse where the human body is subject to incessant flows of energy, plunged into the infinite ramifications of networks and shaped by ideologies of security and health.
This new creation, my third look at the city after Metapolis and Silent Collisions, is a continuation of my Dance and Architecture project.
Following collaborations with Diller & Scofidio, Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel and Thom Mayne, this time I asked the French architect Dominique Perrault to create the stage design.
A Dance and Architecture workshop organise in Parma, during one month, on the initiative of the Facoltà di Design e Arti of the Università IUAV di Venezia and the Fondazione Teatro Due di Parma will gather the dancers of the Ballet National de Marseille and the students of the faculty.
The result of this workshop, first step of the new production, will be presented in May 2005 in the frame of the Parma Festival.
The worldpremiere will take place at La Criée in Marseille in July and is the first collaboration between the Ballet National and the Festival de Marseille.
