APPEARANCE
A DIPTYCH BASED ON KINDERTOTENLIEDER

The Ballet National of Marseille and ICK launch Kindertotenlieder, a two-step performance inspired from the lyrical masterpiece five lieder by Gustav Mahler. Apparition is the first part of this creation, in which innocence and hope are exalted into a danced and sung performance.

After having read the poems written by Friedrich Rückert as a tribute to his dead children in 1833, Gustav Mahler composed between 1901 and 1904 five songs full of pain and light : the Kindertotenlieder.

The piece has been adapted by Franck Krawczyk for a children’s choir and piano. Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten have drawn their inspiration from this musical monument by providing a new interpretation that questions the borders of life and death. By taking the spectator to travel into a musical and bright landscape made of animal voices, they confront the fragility of life with the cold duplication of images, bringing the mourning enigma and incarnation to their climactic point.
